Title: Kate Curran Delivering Eggs to the Humphrys
Based on a recorded interview with Ballyhaise native Olive Brown. Olive grew up on the land of the Agricultural collage and still works here to this day. Her Father and Mother & brother worked here too. Her grandmother Kate Curran delivered egg’s to the Humphrys family.
She recalls the strawberries, raspberries & cabbage in castle field. She grew up in the fond company of pigs, hens, cows & sheep. As a little girl she
enjoyed working in the walled garden pulling carrots, potatoes, parsnips & turnips from the soil.
She says that although the grand house has stayed the same. The land is forever changing.
“We lived of the land when I was a child, the wall garden stopped being used sometime in the1980’s when big supermarkets came in. The
vegetables no longer grow in castle field either. Families worked and lived on the grounds, that has changed, everyone leaves at 5pm these days. The house is still being used though and has never stopped being used.
Students have been coming through this house for 110 years now.”
