The following unique story comes printed as part of the piece

Emigrant: Daragh Finn

Daragh Finn was born in Drumalee, Co Cavan, when interviewed Daragh was living in Chiswick, West London but has since moved back to Ireland and lives and works in Co Cork.

After qualifying  as a doctor in 2008 in Ireland Daragh continued to train and specialise in paediatrics. He moved to London in 2017 at the age of 33 to train further in paediatric cardiology, this cannot be done in Ireland. When i asked Daragh about settling in he describes his first night arriving into London late at night, trying to find his accommodation and getting straight into his new job the next morning. “It was challenging settling into the new work environment, there was a higher and stricter set of expectations than at home. “

Being away from family and adjusting  to the “ sensory overload” on his daily commute was difficult .  As time went on Daragh adjusted to the changes, things got easier when his then fiancee, now wife moved over to join him. He enjoyed learning and progressing in his field in this new environment, meeting doctors from all over the world in work everyday and using his time off to embrace the wonderful museum & theatre scene in London, Daragh is also a talented actor. On the week I interviewed Daragh he had been offered a permanent job as a paediatric consultant in Cork. The job was offered on as a result of his London experience.  Daragh has since moved home but overall his emigration experience was a positive one. When asked what he missed about Ireland most he said is was the sea.  And when I asked him what the word home mean’t to him he said that for him home is a place where he feels safe.
