The following unique story comes printed as part of the product:
Emigrant: Philip Mc Gahern
Philip Mc Gahern was born in Bruskey, Co Cavan. He went to London 1969 at the age of 18 to try get work. Himself and his friend spend the first few weeks sleeping on trains and in train stations, he has grim memories of this experience describing it as “An Underworld”. Eventually he landed a construction job which he wasen’t too keen on and then later a job in The Beehive pub in Tottenham. He loved bar work: pouring drinks, dealing with money and talking to customers. Until one night in 1974 when he was working in a pub in Ladbrook groove, the Police came in and arrested him. They thought he was a member of the IRA and that he had driven a get away car for a London bombing. Philip described how they kept him under arrest for four days and nights. They tried to get him to sign a statement by torturing him with beatings , no sleep etc. They even raided his home house in Cavan. After four days they found the right man and let Philip go but he still struggles to recover from such a traumatic experience and is uneasy to come visit his home of Cavan after the shame of the home place being raided in his name. Philip has wonderful memories of Cavan as a boy, he is very proud to have played under 12’s for Lacken GAA in Brefine Park. He also fondly remembers working as a porter in the Farnham Arms hotel and following the Mighty Avon’s show band around the dances, he continued to follow them when he got to London too. Philip has a partner in London and feels that he will remain there now. for the rest of his life “ My body lives in London but my lives in Cavan”
