Lovers of St Mogues
A print From Jackie’s ever 2014 Cavan Folklore collection: The Hollow
St Mogues Island, Bawnboy, Co Cavan.
“An old Legend concerning the island tells of a magical floating stone, St Killian, as a result of a divine foresight into the birth of a future saint, arrived on the island. There he found a mother and a child stranded. He commanded the women to place the child on a flat object which happened to be a hearthstone from a cottage on the island. He then commanded the stone to move which it miraculously did. The stone, with its passengers, then floated to the mainland where Mogue was baptised.
For many years this magical stone ferried people back and forth from the mainland to the island. However the service came to a sudden and tragic end. Apparently, two young lovers got overcome with passion on the stone in the middle of the lake. Divine wrath ensued. The stone broke in half, consigning the amorous pair to a watery grave.
The two sections of the stone drifted apart. One settled on the island while the other came to rest on the lake shore. The latter section was removed and converted into a holy water font. It was installed for years in Holy Trinity Church. Kildoagh and in 1979 was moved to the new church at Bawnboy.”
