Reflections Of Covid (Small Framed Print)

sold out

Each print of original water colour and pen drawing is limited to 40 editions on each size and is signed and numbered by me, the artist.

In May 2021 I was invited in to speak to the residents of Oriel Lodge about their personal reflections of Covid 19 and Lockdown in order to create a piece of art in response. This was not long after the vaccine had come in, and we had emerged as a nation from the shocking global pandemic which shook our spirits to the core.

Freddie Stewart said that in all his 87 years on earth he had never seen anything like it, and he reflected fondly on the simpler times of his childhood growing up in Milltown. Other residents spoke about particularly missing family, dancing, hugging, going to football matches and traveling the world. Positive things during this time that we reflected on were video calls with family on the phone, reading, listening to sport and music on the radio, prayer and walking in nature.

Many spoke about enjoying the slow pace of the pandemic and finding hope and restoration in the power of nature. The local nature is one thing that they always had access to at this difficult time. The flowers that blossom from the lungs in this piece are native wild flowers of Belturbet. I picked many wild flowers around Belturbet to bring back to my studio and paint but the ones that feature here are the most colourful ones giving the best sense of hope. I hope that overall this piece gives all of us a sense of hope, growth and achievement, having coming through such an unprecedented time and coming out stronger and more positive that ever.

Thank you to all the residents of Oriel Lodge for welcoming me in and sharing your stories with me and to Sarah McGuigan and The National lottery of Ireland for facilitating this project.
