This print is part of my 2020 Dreamscapes collection which was created for the wonderful Turbet Island Dreamscape Trail in Belturbet, Co Cavan.
What is a dreamscape?
In the dictionary the word dreamscape means “A landscape or scene with the strangeness or mystery characteristic of dreams.”
Each print in this series of Dreamscape has a beautiful story to tell. I created each in response to the landscape and extensive historical and mythological research of the local land. The unique story comes with the print and gives an extra special depth of meaning. It makes a unique gift for anyone interested in folklore or nature.
The Story for this piece:
In Irish mythology and folklore, there are various tales about the River Erne’s origins. One says that it is named after a mythical woman named Erne. Queen Méabh's lady-in-waiting at Cruachan, Erne and her maidens were frightened away from Cruachan when a fearsome giant emerged from the cave of Oweynagat. They fled northward and drowned in a river or lake, their bodies dissolving to become Lough Erne. Another tale says that it was
formed during a battle between the Érainn and the army of High King Fíachu Labrainne, it burst from the ground and drowned the Érainn... In Bridie Smith Brady’s article “The frontier islands of the river Erne” which appeared in the Anglo Celt in 1927. She references the same battle
According to this article the Erainn people are part of the Firbolg tribe. In
medieval Irish myth, the Firbolg (also spelt Fir Bolg and Fir Bholg) were the fourth group of people to settle in Ireland. They were descended from the Muintir Nemid, an earlier group who abandoned Ireland and went to different parts of Europe. Those who went to Greece became the Fir Bolg and
eventually returned to the now-uninhabited Ireland. In the W.B Yeats story
“The Golden Apples of Lough Erne” the city underneath Lough Erne is ruled by the king of the Fir Bolg.
In my dreamscape version the silver eel and the bullfinch take part in the
battle too, they are both natives of the river and the island now and I imagine they were here then too.
